Advanced Rifle
Marksmanship course offered in Hayward by DNR
|
HAYWARD,
WI. --– Local shooters and hunters ready to take their sport to the next
level should register for an August advanced rifle marksmanship course
developed by the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) hunter education
division.
“In hunter
education students learned safe gun handling and safe hunting practices,”
said Northern Region Safety Warden Christopher Wunrow, “Our new program
provides a higher skill level of gun shooting and firearm maintenance.”
The course is hosted by
the Hayward Rod and Gun Club and sponsored by Sawyer County Outdoor
Projects and Education (S.C.O.P.E.). DNR is providing the instructors.
The event takes place on Aug. 2 and 3 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hayward
Rod and Gun Club, 4 miles east of the City of Hayward.
Anyone who has graduated
from the Basic Hunter Education Course, or who is exempt, can take the
course. Enrollment is limited to the first 20 people who apply.
Participants must provide their own rifle and scope along with 80 rounds
of factory loaded ammunition. Lunch each day is provided. The
cost of the clinic is $25.00. S.C.O.P.E will be off setting costs to
attendees 18 years of age and younger.
Course content includes
learning the shooting platform, the seven factors common to all shooting
positions, and the seven steps in a proper shooting sequence. Telescopic
sight maintenance, adjustment, and mounting are covered along with
ammunition and how weather, geographic conditions, temperature, wind, and
sunlight can affect accuracy. Rifle maintenance including equipment
needed, cleaning techniques, and special considerations are demonstrated.
Lastly, Wunrow said, there is much personal coaching done throughout the
program and plenty of hands-on experience.
Students can bring any
legal deer hunting rifle chambered in a legal deer hunting caliber for
Wisconsin, with a variable power scope.
This is the third year
the course has been put on in Wisconsin and the first time it is being
offered in Hayward. Wunrow said past participants have registered
favorable comments about the program. “The response from the people that
have attended the course has been unanimous,” Wunrow said, “and most have
said, ‘It was the best firearm training I ever had’.”
Anyone interested in
attending the Rifle Marksmanship Course should check the DNR website; look
