Changes to residency rule fall short for Milwaukee

Milwaukee’s mayor is vowing to continue fighting a plan to lift residency requirements for municipal and county employees.
The provision in the state budget bars municipalities from requiring public employees to live in the community they serve. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says lawmakers should stay out of what’s largely an ongoing debate between the city and its police and fire unions over pension payments.

Senate takes up immigration fight

The U.S. Senate began work Thursday on a comprehensive immigration bill. In earlier comments, Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson expressed support of changes to current law while calling the current immigration system “broken.”
Johnson says the immigration bill should be broken up into separate components including border security and employment verification. The Republican lawmaker said these targeted approaches have better chances of passing than a comprehensive package.
